Meet Phoenix Academy's Counselors
Mrs. Navarro, counselor to students with last names Mc-Z and the AVID students
All About Me . . .
This is my 14th year in education. I have been a teacher for 7 years and a counselor for seven. I love being in education! I grew up in Apple Valley, attending Yucca Loma, Apple Valley Junior High, Vista Campana, and Apple Valley High School. After I graduated, I went to VVC, then to Cal State Fullerton. My original major was communications, but I took an American Studies class and fell in love with history and culture. At that moment, I changed my major. I received my Masters in Teaching and Single Subject Credential from Chapman and my Masters in Education Counseling from Azusa Pacific.
I am currently the counselor for students with last names Mc-Z and AVID 7th and 8th graders. I am also the AVID coordinator at Phoenix Academy. I love my job and look forward to working with all of my students and helping them be the best they can be.
My Expectations for my students . . .
I want to see all of my students succeed and be the best they can be. My goal is to help them as they transition from elementary school into middle school and middle school to high school. I encourage students to ask questions, take notes and come prepared, ready to learn. What they learn today will help them in the future. I want my student to know the high school graduation and A-G requirements. My role as a counselor is to help them reach this goal as they journey into high school. I also want my students to be ready for college, if this is the path they choose. They need to know how to meet the A-G Requirements and hopefully complete a 5 year plan as they prepare for 8th grade. I am also here to guide students through conflicts that may arise and through daily struggles. My door is always open and I welcome you to come in and see me!
Meet Phoenix Academy's Counselors
Mr. Varvel, counselor to students with last names A-Ma and K-6 SST Coordinator
I have been the 8th grade Counselor at Phoenix since it opened three years ago. I have been a School Counselor since 1979. I began Counseling others while serving 6 years in the Navy as a Drug and Alcohol Counselor and then continued my Professional Development upon being Honorably Discharged from the military and graduating from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and a Master of Science Degree in Counseling. I have also previously been employed for several years as a Senior Social Services Practitioner for the County of Riverside while working towards a
California License as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
I have always enjoyed helping young people and their families as these youngsters make their personal transition from being a young boy or girl to a young man or young woman. Growing from an Elementary student to a 9th grader is often challenging, demanding, and stressful and I believe it is through working together with parent (s), guardian (s), and caretaker (s) that a young person’s potential for success can be realized. I have lots of parent/guardian/caretaker conferences to enable all of the child’s stakeholders to come together and work together for everyone’s goals to be realized. Please do
not hesitate to call me or to come in and meet with me about your student.
