01 Introduction to Biology

Introduction to Biology
Living things must be able to maintain their own internal conditions, reproduce, and adapt to their surrounding. Biology is a branch of science attempting to explain the conditions in which living things survive. Science is an endeavor to explain the nature of the universe. This unit covers what makes something alive and how do we study living things.
What should you be able to do by the end of the unit?
  • Students will be able to determine the attributes that make living things different than nonliving things.
  • Students will be able to collect observations, recognize patterns in data and explain inferences.
  • Students will be able to develop, follow, and report the results of an experiment.

What questions should you be able to answer by the end of the unit?
  • What makes something alive?
  • What are the limitations of the scientific method?
  • What constitutes "scientific evidence" and how do we know when there is enough evidence to draw a conclusion?
