An Overview of each LMS Candidate

These are YouTube videos created either by the vendor or other universities. Each takes 5 - 9 minutes to quickly highlight the key features of each LMS.  Click the icon on the lower right corner of the YouTube video to view full screen.  

Instructure Canvas

  • Native Cloud application: updated on continuous cycle (every 2 weeks) rather than through a traditional system life-cycle process (no version numbers)
  • Software Licensing: Open Source Commercial / AGPL with Instructure as the community agent.
  • Hosted by Instructure.
  • Architecture based on Ruby on Rails (a web-development platform).
  • Gold Star certification from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB)

Blackboard Learn

  • Blackboard owns Angel so moving to Blackboard is more of an upgrade (though a significant upgrade)
  • Costs for Blackboard Learn are equivalent to Angel for basic services; other features like collaboration, ePortfolio, etc. have add-on costs.
  • Uses a traditional system life-cycle process with version numbers; current version is 9.1.
  • Software Licensing: Closed source proprietary, however, Blackboard uses an Open API strategy for transparency. Additional fees may apply.
  • Can be remote-hosted or self-hosted.
  • Architecture based on Java J2EE.
  • Gold Star certification from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB)

Desire2Learn

  • Uses a traditional system life-cycle approach with versions.
  • Includes ePortfolio.
  • Software Licensing: Closed source proprietary.
  • Architecture based on Microsoft .Net.
  • Gold Star certification from the National Federation of the Blind (NFB)
