Mathematica  Mathematica is what is known as a "symbolic
algebra" (or symbolic math) program. This means that it can work
with math symbolically, not just solve for a numerical answer. It
can find exact solutions to equations (even solve for one variable
in terms of other variables), solve systems of equations, find the
derivative or integral of a function in symbolic form (calculus),
and solve differential equations symbolically (differential equations).
It can also be used to plot many different types of graphs (2 dimensional,
3 dimensional, parametric, polar coordinates, spherical coordinates,
cylindrical coordinates, vector fields)
This is a very powerful program that is used by many professionals
in the "real world" (wherever that might be). Because
it does so much, however, it does take a little more effort to learn
to use it. While it is mostly used in some of ACC's Calculus II,
Calculus III, Calculus IV, and Differential Equations courses, it
could also be used by students in other courses as well.

handles typing and creating web pages with equations better than Word
does by itself.

used in many of the Statistics courses (MATH 1342) here at ACC.

MINITAB
software in MATH 1342 
ODE Architect  ODE Architect is used in some of the
Differential Equations courses at ACC. It will plot slope fields,
phase portraits, and approximate solution curves using either RungeKutta
or Euler methods. It can also be used to find approximate numerical
solutions as well. It has a very nice graphical interface and is reasonably
easy to use.

Winplot  A graphing program that can plot most types
of graphs (2 dimensional and 3 dimensional). It isn't the prettiest
or easiest to use program available, but it is free and does a lot
of things. (It isn't very hard to learn. It just has a few quirks
and the menus are laid out in a quirky manner. If you experiment around
with it a little, you can do a lot of things.) There are detailed
instructions available in this guide. This program is useful in most
ACC math courses from College Algebra, Trig, Precalculus, Calculus
(any version), through Differential Equations.
