Recommended Systems

The current base hardware configuration for the CIT labs ought to be a good place to start for APT students setting up computers for courses. James Harris, the CIT Computer Support Supervisor, provided us with the following details.

A minimum desktop hardware configuration would be something like:
• An Intel Core i3 processor, or better or comparable AMD processor;
• 8GB of RAM (or more)
• Preferably a discrete video card (ATI or Nvidia) with at least 512MB of  available video RAM.
  We usually go a little higher than that for some labs (mainly for GAME and LAN courses.)

As for software:
 • In the labs we use Windows 7 64bit Professional, but Windows 7 Home Premium in 32 or 64 bit,
   Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and likely Windows 10 all work well.
•  Students should avoid the Windows "Starter" editions.
•  We have also had quite a few students use various Linux-based operating systems, and of course OSX, successfully.
