Module 1: Introduction

APT provides an exciting opportunity for students interested in learning computer programming. The Department of Labor (DOL) and Austin Community College have launched a pilot Competency Based Education (CBE) program in accelerated training for programmers. CBE is a hot topic in higher education these days; particularly as the country searches for ways to improve college affordability and more accurately measure student learning. 
  • MISSION: Increase the attainment of certificates, certifications, diplomas and other credentials to better prepare workers and other adults for high-wage, high skill employment in growth industry sectors. Online learning strategies can allow adults who are struggling to balance the competing demands of work and family to acquire new skills at a time and place convenient to them. 
  •  PRE-ASSESSMENT:  We want program participants to succeed, the assessment indicates the degree to which an individual student possesses attributes, skills and knowledge that contribute to success including:
    • Self-motivation
    • Time-management skills
    • Self-discipline
    • On-screen Reading Rate and Recall
    • Persistence
    • Availability of time
    • Ability to use a laptop, printer, software, and the Internet
    • Typing speed and accuracy
