2017-2018 6th Grade Aurora Frontier

Welcome to Mr. Graff’s 6th grade math class.  I am excited for the 2017-18 school year.  This website is designed to help both students and their parents by showing daily agendas, notes, classwork and any other useful information that may need to be communicated.

As a sixth grader, your child will build on all of the math topics he or she has learned in previous years.  Our math class will always begin with a warm-up activity.  Warm-ups will include, but not be limited to topics such as number sense, computation, data-analysis, percent, proportional reasoning, and geometry.  I also love to use this time for some brain teasers and logic puzzles to help students stretch their minds.

Classwork is a key to success in math and our daily class notebook will be an essential
component for success.  All notes, examples, sample/practice problems and homework will be in the notebook.  You should check your child's notebook regularly. First it shows that you value what they are learning in class, second it provides quick discussion topics about what they are learning, and finally it alerts you if they are not keeping up with the lessons.

Homework is an essential aspect of learning and will be assigned Monday thru Thursday.
Your child should expect to spend between 15 and 30 minutes of homework including a discussion of what was learned each day with someone at home.  If your child misses class, he or she is responsible for making up the assigned homework, as well as any activities from class that day.

Assessment is another important aspect of learning. There will be a quiz almost every week to assess the current learning.  At least 24 hours notice will
be given for all assessments.

I am very happy and excited to have the opportunity to teach your child mathematics this year.  I will make every effort to make lessons both interesting and effective.  A strong line of communication is essential to academic success and I invite your questions and concerns at any time.  Please contact me via e-mail at kfgraff@aurorak12.org.

Sincerely,

Kurt Graff
