Meet the Board

Position: President
Name: Jessica K. Kim
Age: 28
Married 09/17/2005 to Joseph G. Kim
Hometown: Indianapolis, Indiana

Prior to med school: After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian Language & Culture – Korean Language from Indiana University in 2004, I worked as a Marketing Specialist and then as a Product Manager for the Aortic Intervention Division at Cook Medical Incorporated – a medical device manufacturing company. My work in marketing and project management for Cook provided me an opportunity to see the medical field first hand. After several years with the company I decided to pursue a career in medicine as a physician so that I could deliver health care to patient’s first-hand.

Hobbies: Volleyball is my ultimate addiction. I also enjoy playing golf and tennis. As musical abilities go, I play the violin and piano.

Activities: In addition to Rotaract, I am a member of Sigma Sigma Phi and I am also the Professional Development Executive for SOMA.

Why I joined Rotaract: I learned about Rotary International through a dear mentor back home. Upon leaving for medical school, I decided that I would like to join Rotary International and serve my community as a future physician upon my entrance into the medical profession. I was incredibly excited to learn about Rotaract at ATSU during my first year in medical school. I thought joining Rotaract, a club sponsored by Rotary International, would give me an opportunity to be a part of the wonderful international service organization I had already longed to become a part of! I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of Rotaract and I am truly honored to serve as President for this wonderful organization. Rotary International and Rotaract provide their members with so many opportunities to serve their local and international communities in addition to providing opportunities for leadership, character and professional development. My experience as a Rotaract member has only strengthened my personal commitment to join and serve a future Rotary Club as a future physician.

Position: Vice-President
Name: Valena N. Fiscus
Age: 30
Hometown: Clinton, IN

Prior to med school: After graduating from Indiana University-Bloomington with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, I began work as a research associate in a biochemistry lab at IU. At the same time, I began to pursue my Master in Public Health, which I received May of 2008, as well as train as a paramedic at the local hospital. After witnessing firsthand the tragedy and miracle that is medicine, I decided that I would return to medical school so I could make a larger difference in the people’s live I was wanting to serve, particularly those in underserved areas.

Hobbies: I love to cook and bake as well as feed people. I also enjoy hiking and biking. As for the artistic side, I am an opera addict and sing Soprano but my range is fairly large and I can sing Tenor when necessary. I also enjoy painting as well as learning to play my guitar.

Activities: In addition to Rotaract, I am President of Physicians for Social Responsibility, a Student Ambassador for ATSU and Co-chair the SGA committee for Osteopathic Pride and Service.

Why I joined Rotaract: I initially joined Rotaract after the past President of the club explained what Rotary International was about and encouraged me to join. Having overcome many obstacles in life, I am blessed to be where I am today and wanted to join an organization whose reputation and beliefs were the same as mine: Service above Self. Rotaract allows me to connect with Rotary members in the community and abroad while also providing an outlet for community service. Rotary International excels in providing outstanding service to not only the local community to but to the people of the world who are in need and I am proud and honored to be associated with an organization with members who are so giving. I am excited to continue the tradition of giving to the people of the world around me and am excited to continue the tradition Rotary International has upheld for so long.

Activities: I am currently involved with Rotaract (obviously), as well as a member of AMSA and ACOFP. I am a Student Ambassador, and I am the treasurer of Camp Quality Central Missouri, a summer camp for pediatric oncology patients, and their siblings.
