Regional Science Bowl Competition

Congratulations to the AHS Science Bowl Team: Kyle De Matias, Jessica Jen, Kaeden Russell, Claire Livengood, and Justin Roberts for taking 3rd place out of 32 teams at the Science Bowl Competition this weekend at Cal State Bakersfield. They defeated teams from Templeton and SLO along the way. Thank you John Forte & Angie Mcquitty for inspiring students!

Community Partnerships at its Best

Stu Stoddard, Executive Director of Bond Projects and Facilities, introduced Rubi Rajbanshi from the San Luis Obispo County Pollution Control District. Rubi shared with the Board some of the grants that they have assisted AUSD in securing over the last several years such as; new buses, fuel storage tanks, retrofitted buses, and more. The latest being 2 EV charging stations along $4,905 to go towards the purchase of a 2017 Chevy Volt. AUSD is committed to pursuing all avenues of sustainability thru community partnerships!

AHS Presents Students with Completed Certifications
Andrew Weatherly, AHS Ag teacher, along with students Oren and Chandler, shared with the Board a list of students who have received certification in some of the Career Pathways being offered at AHS. Mr. Weatherly also shared that over 80 students have been able to obtain their OSHA 10-Hour Cards to show that they have completed a 10 hour course on safety recognition, avoidance, abatement and prevention of safety and health hazards in the workplace. Way to go Greyhounds!

Lighthouse Atascadero Mentoring Program, LAMP

Sometimes, all a kid needs to overcome adversity is a helping hand. The Lighthouse Atascadero Mentoring Program, also known as LAMP, has been under supervision of Ms. Davis, Atascadero Middle School teacher and director, as well as Atascadero High School teachers Mr. Melzer and Mr. Davis. The Greyhound Foundation, in collaboration with the Atascadero Unified School District founded the program to help middle school students strengthen their individual abilities to make healthy decisions. The goal of this mentor program is to model positive leadership, honesty and loyalty.

Congratulations to Derek Gong, AHS student and trumpet player, for making the State Honor Band. He was one of over 3,000 high school students who tried out for this honor. Band Instructor Nate Conrad touted his talents by calling Derek a phenomenal musician and outstanding individual. Way to go Derek!

AHS AP Students honored at Board meeting
AHS Students honored for being AP Scholars

The Board of Trustees were honored to recognize several of the Atascadero High School students as AP scholars. Principal Bill Neely presented each with a certificate recognizing their achievement in one of 3 separate areas. All of the students had to score a 3 or higher on at least 3 of the AP exams to be considered an AP Scholar. To be recognized as an AP Scholar with Honors they had to score 3 or higher on at least 4 AP exams. The highest honor given was to those who scored 3 or higher on at least 5 AP exams, receiving the recognition of AP Scholar with Special Recognition. Franko Jiro, AHS senior, received this honor and will be attending Harvard University in the fall. Congratulations to each of these scholars. You represent yourselves and your school with distinction.

Book War's Hogwarts Party

Atascadero Middle School hosted the Harry Potter Reading Celebration for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. Students were invited if they read at least one Harry Potter book and took the Reading Counts test or wrote a summary about the book. Students who read the entire series were awarded prizes. Students at the celebration lunch got to have Harry Potter themed snacks and were part of a raffle drawing as well. Thanks to Mrs. O'Malley and Ms. Garcia for all the hard work of getting this together!"

San Gabriel STEAM Expo 2018

San Gabriel's Family STEAM Expo had over 175 students participate in activities from Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. Members from Cal Poly, Paso Robles Science Department, and Dr. Hider, a local optometrist, volunteered their time to run stations.

San Benito PTA presents the Board with gifts and a challenge!
San Benito Elementary School PTA presented the Board with Bengal cups and a challenge to join their PTA, which by the way was accepted. They were commended for having 100% membership at their site and for 2 years in a row having the highest percentage of members in the County. Superintendent Butler stated their presentation was one of the best he has seen. Way to go Bengals!

SRAA Office Staff Recognized by the Board

Santa Rosa Academic Academy office staff, Nikki Hutchinson and Eddy Grace, were recognized for the Core Value of Excellence. Superintendent Butler stated he has seen them in action with customer service being paramount with new students and families. Principal Tim Sobraske stated that the opening of a new housing development, among other things, has brought 24 (and counting) new students in the last couple of weeks and that the office staff exudes a positive energy with their sincerity and genuineness. Asst. Superintendent Eichperger stated how important that first interaction is for new families and commended them for setting the right tone.

AHS Women's Water Polo Ranked in the CIFSS Top Ten

The CIF Southern Section office released on Monday its top women's water polo teams. Out of 46 schools in Southern California the Greyhounds are ranked number 10. Way to go Lady Greyhounds! Check out the great write up in the Atascadero News.

Santa Rosa Academic Academy principal Tim Sobraske gave a presentation to the Board of Trustees. As part of his presentation, two SRAA 5th grade students, Paige and Penelope, demonstrated just what they have been learning in robotics. They shared their enthusiasm for the upcoming competition this Saturday, December 16th, to be held at SRAA. It is anticipated that there will be 34 teams in attendance from all over the county. These kids' skills are incredible! Go AUSD Elementary Robotics teams!

PG&E awards AUSD with a check for our energy efficient Middle School

Energy Efficient Middle School

Rebecca Weber and Isaiah Franco from PG&E Company congratulated AUSD for taking part in their Savings by Design program and as a result presented a check for $44,242.00 to the District. The competitive classroom project at Atascadero Middle School, where the classrooms are 29% more efficient than the code standards, led to this cash award. Mr. Stu Stoddard and project architect Greg Ravatt were on hand to be recognized for their efforts in the project.

Outgoing Rotary President John Neal presented AHS Auto Shop teacher Charlie Herrera with a check for $5,000.00 to be used in the Automotive Career Technical Pathways. Also on hand was Rotarian Rich Johnson who stated that a $4,000.00 donation to the CTE Endowment has also been made. Thank you Rotarians for your continued support of the students in AUSD!

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the AHS Library offered a Salsa Dance Lesson to students. Library Technician, Maria Pacheco and her dance partner Felipe Gonzalez shared the music, instruments, and dance stylings of Cuban Salsa. A fun time was had by all, including Superintendent Butler and Mrs. Phillips!

Justine Rigali and Deanna Bailey have led a team of 4th and 5th graders on the Robotics Club to competing in the VEX Robotics Crossover Challenge this year. They learned about robotics technology, coding, and collaboration. On Tuesday, 6/6/2017, some of the club members demonstrated a Crossover Competition and coding demonstrations while interested schoolmates, site and district administration, and Atascadero Unified School District Board members watched and cheered them on.

Angela Ramsey, with the support of the Kiwanians, presented Santa Rosa Academic Academy a check for $10,400 that will be used for S.T.E.M. projects and P.E. equipment. E.J. and his daughter, Tobi Rossi, raised over $50,000 that will be used for a new mentoring program for 6th graders at the Middle School.

Great News -- Student Attendance is Up! 

Last year at this time our student attendance rate was 94.69%. Thanks to the talented efforts of staff, the diligent efforts of students and parents this year our student attendance rate has increased to 95.60%. This is a tremendous accomplishment and something we can all be very proud of. Thanks for all you do. Go AUSD!

After 21 matches and 300 teams from around the world, Atascadero Greybots Team 973 moved into the finals to take the world championship this past weekend. The team set the World High Score!

On Tuesday, April 25, thirteen AHS Honors Geometry students visited the SLO County Sheriff's Department Crime Lab. The students heard from several forensic specialists and saw the equipment used to analyze fingerprints and crime scene evidence. The crime lab professionals also gave great advice to the students about what they would need to do in order to pursue a career in that field. Thank you to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office for investing time in and inspiring our kids!

Fifty of the fabulous Ceramics' kiddos at Fine Arts Academy have been working hard to glaze bowls for the Empty Bowl Fundraiser on April 27th for Echo Homeless Shelter. It is to be held from 11-2 on Thursday at ABC Church. The students put their artistry and heart into these bowls, and they, and we, are so very proud of their results. Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate exemplary achievement in three “pillars.” Pillar I: reduce environmental impact and costs; Pillar II: improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff; and Pillar III: provide effective environmental education that teaches many disciplines and is especially good at effectively incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, civic skills, and green career pathways. "The knee bone connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone connected to the hip bone..." An architectural rendering of a new biology classroom/lab, a portion of work associated with the Atascadero High School Science and Shops project. 

This project, a collective of 8 science rooms and 2 vocational education shops is anticipated to begin construction in January, 2018.
