Why Wellness Matters

This past spring, the school district wellness team put their heads together to come up with a plan to help every district employee adopt a healthier lifestyle.  We realized that all of us have something we could be doing better to improve our health, so we wrote a grant.  And we won.

The Oregon Education Association Choice Trust has an annual grant to support wellness in district's all around the state.  Through their competitive grants, they provide resources and money to help districts like ours, develop programs to help with school staff wellness.

Our application, which was funded for nearly $25,000, will kick start our own wellness programs and provide new opportunities for all district employees.  From yoga classes to healthy cooking classes, we intend to sponsor activities and challenges that are fun, educational and most of all, rewarding for your health.

Cynthia Harber, one of our AMS physical ed and health teachers, was chosen to coordinate our "Healthy and Wise" activities which are chosen by the district wellness committee.  The committee members for this year are:  Brian Babbitt, Eric Gohr, Tim Lambert, Gordon Thomson, Joshua Funk and Craig Hoppes.  This team will be meeting each month to plan activities that will be posted on this website and also emailed to you.

We are excited about what this grant can do for all of our Astoria School District employees and look forward to helping you live a healthier life.

Planning Ahead

Cooking classes with North Coast Food Web have begun and now is the time to sign up.

We have partnered with the North Coast Food Web which offers healthy cooking classes for the community.  Lessons and meals will include three items from Leanne Brown's cookbook; "Good and Cheap". Participants will prepare an entree, salad, and healthy snack.

Classes will be held at the Food Web facilities from 6:00-7:30.

The facility can handle up to twelve people per night.  Sign up with other staff members from your building for a delicious lesson and make dinner on us!

Walking Challenge

As part of the OEA Choice Trust grant all districts that received grants were invited to participate in the backpack Europe challenge.  Districts from all around the state took part in the event that had over 70 members of our staff up and walking.  When the dust settled, our incredible team took had more members finish the trek than any other district so we took first place!

The next challenge is right around the corner and will be announced soon.
