Zach Hiatt was a three-sport athlete at Astoria High School, earning eight letters through his participation in football, basketball, and baseball. He served as Associated Student Body Vice-President in 1994-1995 and had a cumulative GPA of 3.83. He was justly named the Cowapa League Scholar/Athlete of the year in 1995.
Zach participated in three years of varsity football, earning All-League Honorable Mention in 1992 and 1993, and first-team All-League as a wide receiver in 1994. The 1994 and 1995 teams were league champions. The 1993 team made it to the state playoffs, and the 1994 team were league champions. The 1994 team also made it to the state semi-finals, the first AHS team to do so in many years. Zach was a 1994 team captain, and also earned second-team All-State as a wide receiver and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game in 1995. Zach played three years of varsity basketball, and in doing so, he participated in twelve state tournament games. The team finished 7th in state in 1993, 7th in 1994 and was the state consolation winner in 1995. The 1995 team had a season record of 23-2 and were undefeated in league. He was a team captain in 1995 and also was named as the teams’ Most Valuable Player. Zach earned 1st-team All-League in 1994 and was the league Player of the Year in 1995. At the state level in 1995, Zach was named 1st team All-State as well as 2nd team All-State Tourney. Zach also had the honor of participating on the 1995 OHSCA All-Star Series. At the time of high school graduation, he was approximately the 11th all-time highest scorer for AHS. Zach played baseball at the varsity level his junior and senior years. He was a team captain in 1995 and earned 1st team (utility infield) in 1994.
During his senior year, Zach was recruited by Frosty Westering and accepted his offer to play football at Pacific Lutheran University. Zach played for the Lutes from 1995 - 1999. He was a 3-year starter at wide receiver, and he was named to the Academic All-District Team in 1998 and 1999. Zach was a great competitor and was instrumental to help PLU win the NCAA Division III National Championship in 1999. Zach also participated in PLU Varsity basketball from 1997 - 1998 earning the Most Improved Player award in 1998.
Zach earned a BS in Biology from Pacific Lutheran University in 1999, and his J.D. (Law) from the University of Washington in 2006.
