Scott Atwood

Graduating Class of 1992

When the name Scott Atwood comes up in Astoria High School circles you see the definition of a student-athlete. Scott came to the high school in 1988 and left in 1992 as a decorated athlete and an unbelievable scholar. Scott lettered 11 times in his high school career with four in both cross country and track & field and three in swimming. He is currently a member of the AHS Hall of Fame from two cross country teams and one swim team. Scott was almost a 4.0 student and class salutatorian. To top it all off, he was an Eagle Scout.

Scott was a varsity letterman in cross country in the Fall of 1989 and 1990. It was in his junior and senior year that he rose to the honors of All-League and All-State, with 3rd place finishes in District and a 7th place finish at state both years. He led the Fishermen to the state title as a team in 1990 and a runner up in 1991. Scott was voted “Most Inspirational'' his senior year and helped lead the Fishermen to a run of three State Championships in three years.  Scott lettered in swimming in 1990, 1991, and 1992, and was part of the team that has been inducted to the Hall of Fame.

In track, Scott was a letterman all four years. He was a middle and long distance staple for the Fishermen. He was voted “Most Inspirational” his senior year and was a state qualifier in both the 800 meters and 3000 meters. His 3000 meter qualification was behind two other Hall of Fame members and was quite a feat to make the automatic time.

Scott ended his career at AHS with numerous distinctions including an Oregon Scholar, Vince Dulcich Memorial Scholarship, National Merit Scholar, Presidential Academic Fitness Award, Bausch and Lomb Science Award, Blair Henningsgard Scholar Athlete and the Army Reserve National Scholar Athlete Award.  Scott is indebted to the work and inspiration of Coach Dominey in both his running and professional life.

Scott attended college at Stanford University earning both a B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science. He currently works as a senior software engineer at Google, working on Google Translate. He has lived in the Bay area since high school and has been married to his wife Karen Gee since 2005.

Scott is currently a runner and a cyclist and reintroduced himself to running after a long hiatus. At his cross country team’s Hall of Fame induction in 2014 he ran in the annual alumni run. Scott has since run in 11 marathons and quite a few half marathons, posting personal bests of 1:24:42 and 3:03:06 in his late 40’s. He has qualified for the Boston Marathon three times and just finished his most recent in Chicago.
