Ron Middleton

Graduating Class of 1973

Ron Middleton hit Gyro Field running for the Fishermen during the coaching era of Chuck Burns. As a sophomore running back and defensive linebacker, Ron was part of an outstanding JV team that finished the season 6-0-1 and scored 100 points in one game. This was a signal that there were good things on the horizon for the Fishermen gridders.

Entering the varsity program full time as a junior, Ron continued to build his skills as a true all around player. He led the team in punt and kickoff returns and was beginning to be noticed statewide for his running prowess and linebacking efforts. Whether playing halfback, returning kickoffs or punts, Ron would run over opponents with his tough, hardnosed running style. He earned 2nd Team All-League recognition on offense and defense.

Ron’s senior year began with a knee injury during daily doubles. Playing through the pain, Ron continued to accrue real estate on the field running over opponents throughout the Coast Valley League. Ron’s efforts, along with great team chemistry, were rewarded with Astoria’s first CVL Football Championship. Ron not only received 1st-team All-League honors on offense and defense, but he and his Fishermen went on to win a state quarter-final game against No. 1 ranked Grants Pass before losing to Wilson in the semifinals.

Ron ended that final high school season earning 1st Team All-State Running Back and 1st Team All-State Linebacker, a unique recognition that few have achieved. He was also recognized with the Chris Pohl Award and was chosen to play in the Shriner’s All-Star Game. Although Ron’s high school accolades seem to be centered on football, it should be noted that he also lettered three years in track and wrestling for the Fishermen.

After high school graduation, Ron attended Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University) playing varsity running back as a freshman under the tutelage of the legendary Bill McArthur.

Ron decided to enlist in the United States Marine Corp in January, 1975. The OCE team that Ron left behind went on to win the National Title in 1976, which would have been his senior year. While in the Marine Corps, Ron played eight man football and made the All-Marine Team five out of seven years, acting as player/coach during his final two seasons. This team won the All-Forces Championship three years in a row.

After his military service, Ron returned to Astoria serving as an assistant football coach for the Fishermen in the late 80s and early 90s and as director of the Astoria School District Transportation Department for several years where he drove athletes to their respective destinations.

Ron has left an imprint on Astoria High Schools’ football program. His work ethic, commitment and dedication to do what he loved, immortalizes him today as a member of the Astoria High School Hall of Fame.
