Nicolle Johnson

Graduating Class of 1989

Lettering in one sport in high school is tough. Lettering in two sports is a great accomplishment. Lettering in three sports, for three years and receiving multiple all-league distinctions makes you a hall of famer. Nicolle Johnson-Landwehr is a hall of famer.

The Class of 1989 graduate participated in volleyball, basketball and softball. She received a varsity letter in all three from her sophomore season on, collecting a total of nine letters.

In the fall, Nicolle played three years on the varsity volleyball team. Playing in a tough league, the team battled hard but was unable to have much success. That did not stop her from receiving personal honors. As a junior, Nicolle was named the teams MVP. She also was recognized by the Cowapa League being named to the first team. In her senior season, she was able to post another strong season and again be named team MVP and receive first team All-League honors. Nicolle was also chosen, her senior year, to represent Astoria as a member of the west squad in the 1989 volleyball All-Star games.

In the winter, Johnson laced up her sneakers and was a three year member of hall of fame coach Tighe Davis varsity basketball teams. A highlight in her hoops career was the 1988-89 season. Finishing the season with a league record of 10-2, the Lady Fishermen were locked in a three way tie for first. Forced to a league playoff, the girls prevailed and earned a trip to the state tournament and a meeting with number 1 rated Jefferson. The Lady Fishermen were able to pull off the upset of the tournament toppling Jefferson 49-45. Following that season, Nicolle was recognized in the league as honorable mention.

In the spring, she took her skills to the softball diamond. Playing mostly as a pitcher, Nicolle threw some serious heat at league foes. She was well respected league-wide earning First Team status as a junior and senior. Also as a senior, she was named to the First Team All-State as a pitcher. To top off her softball career, she was asked to participate in the East-West All-Star series.

Her work at Astoria High School complete, Nicolle earned one more honor. Her work on the volleyball court earned her a full scholarship to Portland State University. Ankle surgery forced her career to end during her sophomore season.
