Nancy Lovvold
Graduating Class of 1974
Nancy Lovvold is the true epitome of a Scholar-Athlete. Nancy graduated from AHS with Co-Valedictorian honors in 1974, and was voted “Best All Around Female” by her peers. Nancy follows in her father’s athletic footsteps: Howard Lovvold, class of 1946 inducted into the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
Nancy participated in volleyball, basketball, softball and powder puff football during her years as an AHS student. She was a 3-year varsity volleyball and basketball player. She also participated in fast pitch softball through Astoria Parks and Recreation during her senior year.
In 1973, Nancy was the volleyball captain and was voted Most Valuable Player and Outstanding Athlete her senior year.
Nancy was basketball team captain in 1972-73 and led the team in scoring with 13.5 points per game, shooting 49% from the field and led in steals with 31 in 13 games. The season record was
12 – 1. Also in 1973-74, she was basketball team captain and led her team to an undefeated regular season. She was recognized as the team’s top scorer with 220 points in the season.
Nancy competed in the era before Title IX, when there were no All-League or All-State selections. Certainly she would have garnered many honors based on her strong athletic abilities.
Nancy earned an academic scholarship to Stanford University, and was one of two freshmen to walk-on and make the varsity women’s basketball team where she started at point guard all four years. While at Stanford, she served as team co-captain her senior year.
Nancy earned her Bachelor of Arts in Economics with Honor and Distinction from Stanford. She also earned her MBA from Long Island University.
Nancy’s daughter, Christina, was recently inducted into her high schools’ Hall of Fame. Nancy’s induction into the Astoria High School Hall of Fame completes a unique attainment of three consecutive generations elected to their high school hall of fame.
