As soon as Julie Lum entered the ranks of varsity athletics, she made an impact and earned starting positions in each sport in which she participated. She earned ten athletic letters during her seasons of volleyball, basketball and softball. Julie was known as a tremendous athlete and her bullet serves in volleyball, tenacious defense in basketball, and heady plays on the softball diamond always left their mark on those who witnessed her achievements. Overall, the Cowapa League win/loss record during Julie’s entire varsity career when teams she participated on made the playoffs (seven out of ten teams) is an astonishing 113 and 18 for a .851 winning percentage.
As a three year starter on the volleyball court, Julie was named to the Cowapa First Team her junior and senior seasons. She led the Lady Fishermen volleyball team to their first ever OSAA playoff game her senior season. Unfortunately, they lost in the first round to a powerful LaSalle team who went on to win the state title. The team finished second in the Cowapa League with a nine win, three loss record. Julie was voted MVP by her teammates her senior year.
Basketball season brought more accolades for Julie. Again, a three year starter, she was named as team MVP and earned Cowapa League First Team honors all three seasons. She was named to the OSAA All-State Honorable Mention her junior year and to the second team her senior year. At the State Basketball Tournament, she was named to the Second Team All-Tournament team (in 1984, the team placed 4th). This team was ranked in the top two spots in the AP prep polls throughout the season. As a senior, Julie averaged 10.3 points per game, 6.8 rebounds, 5.3 steals and 3.5 assists. Julie also was selected to participate on the North-South All-Star Basketball series her senior year. During Julie’s three season career in basketball, the team finished with an exceptional 55 and 4 Cowapa League win/loss record, winning two league championships and a second place finish. Her fondest memory? Making a 30 foot shot with one second left at the state tournament to win the game.
The softball diamond is where Julie really found a home. As a four year letter winner, she led the Lady Fishermen to three straight Cowapa League second place finishes, earning OSAA state playoff appearances. Julie earned first team Cowapa honors three straight seasons.
She was a member of National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll, a national journalistic honor society. She was named by her senior classmates as “Most Athletic” and received the Dr. Blair Henningsgaard Award as the outstanding senior female athlete. Julie was also named as the Oregon Chinese Female Athlete of the Year, awarded by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association in 1984. After graduation, Julie entered Lewis and Clark College where she was a starter on the women’s basketball team.
