Gordon Scott

Graduating Class of 1959

If Gordon Scott were still in an Astoria High School basketball uniform and arching up one of his hook shots at the time of his 1997 induction into the AHS Hall of Fame, longtime Daily Astorian sports writer, Paul Danzer, would probably describe Scott in just two words: "Man Child.”

During Scott's senior year of 1958-59, he was a prep behemoth. Listed at 6-foot-4, and his weight fluctuating somewhere between 225 and 240 pounds, his mere presence drew the opponents attention. Scott, a three year letterman, used his great size as a tight end to overpower his foes.

Coach Pete Bryant's Metro League champions were 7-2-1, and Scott would be Astoria High School's most decorated gridder. Scott was named to the 1st team All-Metro unit. He followed that honor up with 1st team placement on both the Oregonian and State Journal 1st team All-State squad. The Sporting News out of St. Louis listed him as an Honorable Mention All-American.

Although his body was suited for football, it was basketball that brought Scott's name to the forefront of Oregon prep circles. During his sophomore year, AHS recorded a 17-8 mark. The Fishermen were 21-5 and Metro League champions in Scott's junior year. He was a 1st team All-Metro choice and at the state tournament he picked up 2nd team honors. His 10-of-11 free throw performance in one game stood as a tourney record for a number of years.

In a 68-50 win over Tillamook on January 4, 1958, Scott poured in 44 points, topping Ron Smart's old school record of 33 points set in 1953. Scott's 44 point outburst would stand the test of time. At the time of his 1997 Hall of Fame induction, his single-game scoring effort still was in place as the AHS school record. As a senior, Scott and the Fishermen were again Metro League champions and 21-3 overall. Scott was accorded every honor imaginable. A 17 point, 30 rebound outing in a 57-47 win over Beaverton was a typical night, and 1st team All-Metro acclaim followed.

His 975 career points are listed only behind Ted Sarpola and Dave Romppanen on the all-time Astoria High School scoring charts. Scott would join Jefferson's Terry Baker and Marshfield's Mel Counts on the Oregonian and State Journal's All-State team.

Before an untimely auto death, Scott led the University of Oregon freshmen in scoring. His 26 and 27 point games against the Terry Baker-led Oregon State Rooks highlighted the season.

Astoria annually presents the Gordon Scott trophy to the most outstanding senior basketball player.
