Englund Marine’s support to Astoria High School Athletics spans over numerous decades. In fact, four generations of Englund’s have participated in athletics at AHS. Englund Marine’s contributions, whether it be financial or supportive in spirit, have enriched the lives of many athletes who have attended Astoria High School. The AHS Hall of Fame was started in 1997 and Jon Englund was an obvious choice for that very first induction class. That honor is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Englund Marine’s involvement to AHS Athletics.
Englund Marine recognized the need for extreme winter weather gear essential for an important football game in Vale. They also used their resources to acquire heaters and gloves that protected the Football team during 4-6 inches of snow. In 2016, after observing kids getting drenched on the sidelines, Englund Marine purchased rain coats for the football team.
The company was an instrumental contributor to the Astoria Baseball Foundation. The primary function of this group was to improve baseball facilities including the building of the current hitting facility. Englund Marine was an annual PURPLE & GOLD donor who supports Astoria High athletics with direct financial assistance as well as regular contributions to the school’s Assistance Fund which is designed to help students pay for admittance to camps or purchasing food and clothing for students in need. When funding ran short for a weight room, Englund Marine stepped in to help purchase the equipment as well as funded the Score Clocks for the main “Brickhouse Gymnasium” at AHS.
The Englund Marine traditions started with Axel Englund opening his first store in 1944 and the company leaders remained in the Englund family with his son, Jon, and now grandson, Kurt Englund, at the helm. These strong leaders will be quick to acknowledge that it takes teamwork by their hardworking employees to run the business. Teamwork and healthy competition are concepts entrenched into the heart of the Mighty Fighting Fishermen. Thanks to Englund Marine for their years of support and congratulations for the honor to be a part of the AHS Hall of Fame.
