Eino Joula

Graduating Class of 1937

Eino Juola was another of those three-sport stars who walked the halls of Astoria High School during the 1930’s. It was not until his final year in high school that Juola’s athletic prowess would flourish and when it did, Astoria teams rode his coat tails to victory after victory.

Football would see the hard hitting back rush for 13 touchdowns and a total of 80 points – both marks still rank him on the all-time top ten lists at Astoria High School. In 1936, Juola’s statistics would rank him second only to Hall of Famer Bobby Anet, who had scored 15 touchdowns for a 90-point season total in his senior season of 1934.

In 38-0 win of Milwaukee Catholic high school, St. Stephens, Juola would score three quick touchdowns before Emigh could call him to the sideline and tell him that his day was over.

Juola, a mid-year graduate of January 1937, would lead the George Emigh coached footballers to the most wins in Astoria High School history with a record of 8-2-1. Those eight victories stood another 15 seasons until the Hall of Fame squad of 1951 rolled to their great 11-1 finish. Gyro Field was most friendly to the local gridders, yielding a 7-0 record, and outscoring visiting foes 153-6.

On defense, Juola led the Astoria defenders in surrendering 32 points in 11 games, a mark that hasn’t been equaled in over 70 years. Astoria shutout eight foes on their 1936 schedule, including the last five games of the season. At the end of the season Juola was presented the Cosovich Award, naming him the most outstanding gridder on the squad. Legendary Astoria coach John Warren, now on the staff at the University of Oregon, offered Juola a football scholarship to the university upon graduation.

On the basketball court, Juola was a backup power forward on a team that featured Hall of Famers Ted Sarpola, Toivo Piippo and Earl Sandness. That cage outfit would drop just one game at the state tournament, and that was to eventual champion Corvallis en route to a 29-11 season record.

He would take up the field events and record outstanding marks in every event he tried. At the county meet he won the high jump and the javelin. Placing second in the discus and shot-put. His distance (157-1) in the javelin would garner him high rankings even by today’s standards.
