Graduating Class of 1948

In the annals of Astoria High School basketball, the golden age of the 30’s and 40’s was a time of unmatched excellence. The teams experienced unparalleled success: qualifying for the state tournament sixteen out of twenty years, earning six state titles, and having numerous players of distinction at both the high school and collegiate level. Doug was a two year starter for the Fishermen at the center position. He played two years in the state tournament, and led his team to a total of fifty-seven wins with records of 24-17 and 33-5. Doug averaged almost 10 points per game in an era when most game point totals were in the thirties and forties. He played for a program that had seen unequaled success for the last two decades.

At 6’ 4 1/2’’ and rangy, Doug was a force in a time when size was at a premium. His highest scoring game was sixteen points vs St. Helens. He scored three hundred thirty seven total points his senior year, which accounted for more than 25% of the team’s season total. Doug played for the legendary coach Wally Palmberg as a junior and for Coach Ernie Stranz as a senior. No formal stats or league awards were kept in those days. During Doug’s final season as a Fisherman, the team was undefeated at home 19-0. Losses that season went to powerful Salem High School twice and Commerence, all on the road. The team entered the state tournament on a twenty game winning streak, rank number two in the state. The Fishermen won their first game of the tournament versus Jefferson of Portland. Unfortunately tough losses followed in their final two games of the tournament to Salem and Tigard. Doug also lettered on Astoria’s baseball team that went 5-6 his senior year.

After high school Doug took his talents to Willamette University. He was a four year letterman for the Bearcats Varsity Cagers. There he was named to the conference All-star team for three years in a row and The Northwest Small College All-star team his senior year. He helped Willamette win four league titles in a row, and set a Bearcat record for total points in a game (32). He was inducted into the Willamette University Hall of Fame in 2000. He later played on an AAU team that competed in Denver for the national title.

Doug’s accomplishments in both high school and college have now landed him in several Hall of Fames, a testament to his role as a centerpiece on multiple successful teams. It is with great honor that we now induct him into Astoria’s Hall of Fame.
