Darren Rodgers

Graduating Class of 1989

If there were ever a more diverse athlete at Astoria High School, Darren Rodgers leaves his mark amongst the best. He was a decorated three sport athlete lettering seven times during his career in football, basketball and baseball.

On the football field Darren had roles with both offense and defense, however he earned his accolades at the position of Defensive Back. Specifically, his tenacity to shut down opposing receivers earned him second team All-League status as junior and All-State honorable mention as a senior. Darren was also awarded the distinguished Chris Pohl award during his senior year.

In the winter, Darren played basketball at the “Brick House” under the guidance of AHS Hall of Fame Coach, Mike Goin. During his Senior year, the Fisherman battled amongst a tough league with three Cowapa league teams ranked in the top ten at state. In their final state game in Eugene, the Fishermen overcame a particularly tough first half and dominated the second half by causing the Lakeview Honkers to turnover the ball 15 times. That pressure was lead by Darren with five key steals and a final win of 61-52 and fourthplace in the state. Darren received first team All-League and team honors of Most Inspirational in 1989.

Darren earned a varsity position on the baseball team as a sophomore where he made himself known as a tough competitor in the Cowapa league with his strength at the plate. Battling opposing pitchers with every at bat, he was known to almost always find a whole in the opponents defense. In his senior year, not only did he finish the season with over a .400 batting average, until his last at bat for the season, he never struck out. He continued to dominate the infield in 1988 and 1989 where he was named Most Valuable Player in both his junior and senior years. Darren’s accomplishments at shortstop garnered him a spot on the second team All-Cowapa League team in 1988 and first team All-Cowapa League and the All-State team in 1989. Darren went onto play baseball in college playing for Lower Columbia Community College in 1990.
