Bob Reiter

Graduating Class of 1954

Bob Reiter was a major force for the Astoria Fishermen during his high school days. As a standout in football, basketball and baseball, he collected ten varsity letters on his way to becoming one of the most decorated athletes in the 1950’s.

When the winter rains hit the coast and our athletes took to the hardwood, Bob turned into a tough inside presence on the basketball court. Lettering in his sophomore, junior and senior years, his ability to attack the boards helped the Fishermen advance to the state tournament all three years. Big, rugged and aggressive, Bob combined his rebounding skills with his abilities to muscle his way to the hoop to turn offensive rebounds into Astoria points.

In the spring, on the diamond, Bob was not only an outstanding defensive first baseman where he often turned errant throws into outs, always batting near the top of the lineup, he proved he could handle himself at the plate.

The fall football season is where Bob really excelled. As a sophomore, he was a member of the 1951 squad that had an undefeated regular season in the Loop Valley-Coast league and went on to play in the state semi-finals at Multnomah Stadium in Portland.

In Bob’s senior year, as captain of the team, his play really started to stand out. He was named to the Loop Valley-Coast league first-team and caught the attention of the state by being honored with a Second-Team All-State award. He was asked to participate in the 1954 Shriner’s game but was unable to play. Many colleges also sat up and took notice of Bob’s gridiron power. He received multiple college offers before deciding on the University of Oregon.

After his playing days, Bob would settle in Astoria, raise his family and work as a longshoreman for 44 years.
