Andre Baugh

Graduating Class of 1973

The words “constantly improving” sums up Andre Baugh’s athletic and working careers. A three- year varsity track star, Andre would be voted by his teammates Most Improved, Most Inspirational, and Most Valuable. His senior year, he was elected co-captain of the Fishermen Team.

As the anchor runner on Astoria’s 440-yard relay team, his ability to overtake quality sprinters with big leads on him meant the Fishermen could never be counted out of a race. A prime example occurred at the 1973 Central Relays when Andre brought the AHS relay team from last to second which played a big part in the whole teams placing second out of 16 teams.

During his senior year, Andre broke the Fisherman school record for 100 yards twice, with a best of 9.9 seconds. He also broke the school 220-yard dash record twice with a best of 22.4, accomplished at the District Championships. As of this date, both records still stand. He also anchored the Fishermen quarter mile relay team to a then school record of 44.5. At the 1973 Coast Valley League District Championships, Andre received All-League Honors for winning both the 100 and 220-yard races, and anchored both the 440 and mile relays which helped lead the Fishermen team to third place.

The next week competing in the State Championships at “storied” Hayward Field, Andre raced to third place in the 100-yard dash, and fourth place in the 220-yard dash. Despite a school enrollment that narrowly qualified the Fishermen to compete with Oregon’s largest schools, Andre helped lead the Fishermen team to eighth place.

Following the season, Andre was selected to Who’s Who in Oregon Track and Field’s Honor Roll, in both the 100 and 220-yard races.

Known primarily for his exploits as a track sprinter, Andre also played running back on the Fishermen football team his junior and senior years. The 1972 team won the Coast Valley League Championship, and fought their way to the State Playoff Semi-Finals.

Following graduation, Andre attended the University of Oregon where he ran on the Duck track team from 1974-76.

After graduation, Andre had a successful career with Weyerhaeuser and in 1999 started his own consulting business.Since 2008, he has served on the Portland Planning and Sustainability Commission which he has chaired since 2012. In 2015, Andre was awarded the City of Portland’s 30th Annual Spirit of Portland Mayor’s Award.
