Throughout the 1990’s, Astoria girl’s fielded many outstanding teams that captured league titles and went on to make strong performances at the state level. In the mid-1990’s, both the volleyball and girls basketball teams piled up the wins on their way to becoming champions on and off the court. For three years, Amy Goin helped lead the way towards their success.
In basketball, Amy played on three consecutive state qualifying teams. During her junior year, with a record of 23-2 and the Cowapa League championship, the highly state ranked team brought home the state consolation championship trophy. Building on that outstanding team, Amy’s senior year team also won the Cowapa league championship and advanced to the state semi-finals.
Both her junior and senior years, Amy was named to the Cowapa league first-team. As a senior, she was honored with all-state honorable mention recognition. She was asked to participate in the state All-Star series but a knee injury prevented her from playing.
On the volleyball court, Amy and her teammates achieved incredible success, showcasing her talents and leaving her mark as a premiere athlete. The team slammed their way to a Cowapa League championship her senior year and participated in the state playoffs. Consistent dominating performances earned her first team all league recognition, the Cowapa League Player of the Year award and All-State Honorable Mention.
After high school, Amy went on to play volleyball at Pacific Lutheran University. For the Lutes, she was a three year starter and her spark and competitive game was recognized by the league’s coaches when they named her to the second team all-conference in both 1997 and 1998. Amy’s abilities at the net piled up. She is currently the career leader in solo blocks and blocks per set average amongst all PLU records.
