The 1995 Astoria High School soccer season started with high expectations, and hopes for a return trip to the State Playoffs. The Fishermen opened up preseason and early league play with resounding victories over all of their opponents. However, during a preseason game with Catlin Gabel, Alex Zametkin, our team leader, suffered a skull fracture. The Fishermen had visions of their dream season going down the drain, but the adversity did not bring them down, it only made them stronger. Great team chemistry and team unity sparked by Randy Snow propelled the Fishermen forward.
Hard work, dedication, and attitude earned the Fishermen first place in the Cowapa League standings and second place in the District Standings with a 9-2-1 record. District playoff wins over Corbett and St. Helen’s meant a State Playoff berth and a trip to Catlin Gabel for the first seed in the District.
Possibly the best games ever played by this team, and always an emotionally packed 90 minutes of regulation play with many matches requiring overtime, the Fishermen lost 2-1 that day to the Eagles. Being the number two seed sent the Fishermen on the road for the first round match at Philomath. The Warriors struck first, but goals by Clint Kindred and B.J. Lyngstad were the deciding factor in a 2-1 victory. The quarterfinal game was played here with the support of the home crowd and a US Coast Guard helicopter dropping the game ball. We beat Marist that day 3-0.
This took the Fishermen to the semifinals and a long road trip to Phoenix. The Pirates came out fast scoring 4 quick goals. The Fishermen fought back and came forth with 2 goals. The game ended with a score of 5-2 and Phoenix headed to the State championship game, which they lost to Catlin Gabel.
Overall, this team was a standout in athletics as well as academics. A great season!
