1994 Girls Basketball

League Champions

Coach Tighe Davis entered his 14th season as the leader of Astoria High’s Lady Fishermen with high expectations. Importantly, the student-athletes in his care for the 1993-94 season shared those same high expectations. Led by All-State junior Kelli Johnston and All-Cowapa League senior Meghan Lavis with a major assist by second team All-State Tournament team junior Amy Goin, the 93-94 Lady Fishermen registered one of the best seasons in the storied history of Astoria Basketball.

The month of December should have been an indicator of the good things to come for the Lady Fishermen as the season started with a win against private school power, Valley Catholic, 65-62. Next was a heartbreaking 53-51 loss versus Silverton but this defeat would serve as a teachable moment for the Lady Fishermen as something special was on the rise. Three consecutive wins followed and the month of December concluded with the girls winning the annual Vince Dulcich Memorial Basketball Tournament with a 51-42 victory against Valley Catholic.

League play started with a 56-47 win versus Clatskanie and seven weeks later concluded with a 65-50 win against Tillamook. In between were ten other consecutive league wins including a 100-47 victory versus the Scappoose Indians giving the Lady Fishermen a perfect 12-0 Cowapa League won-loss record and an overall record of 20-1. This was the first undefeated league season in the history of Astoria High Girls Basketball. The Lady Fishermen entered the O.S.A.A. State Tournament as the number two ranked team in Class 3A.

At the 3A State Tournament the Lady Fishermen were slowed by the Valiants of Valley Catholic and dropped their first round game by a score of 55-45. However, this close knit group would not be deterred from this disappointing result and finished their season on a high note with three convincing Consolation Bracket wins. The Consolation Championship Game saw the Lady Fishermen dominate from start to finish against the Henley Hornets with a final score of 66-40 sending the Consolation Trophy to Astoria High.

Individual honors for the 93-94 Lady Fishermen went to senior Meghan Lavis as she earned her way onto the first Team Cowapa All -League Team; she was joined by junior teammate Kelli Johnston who also earned the Cowapa League Player of the Year Award. Final individual recognition went to junior Amy Goin as she was recognized as a Cowapa All-League member and along with Kelli, made the 2nd Team All State Tournament Team.

According to Coach Davis, “This was one of the hardest working teams I coached. It was also the closest knit team I’ve coached. This team gave 100% in practice as well as games. It was a privilege to be part of this team.” The Lady Fishermen of 1993-94 will certainly be remembered for their 23-2 season, but as importantly, they will be remembered for showing how greatness can be accomplished when everyone is willing to play for each other.
