The 1982 Astoria High School girl’s track team faced the daunting task of replacing half the points lost to graduation from the 1981 state championship team.
Their season would be defined by their two record-setting relay teams, and the girl’s willingness to branch out into 12 different events to help score points. Every girl who competed at the state championship would run on one or both of the 400 and 1600-meter relays.
Their first big test came in January at the Portland Indoor Meet held at Memorial Coliseum, featuring teams from Oregon and Washington. The Fisherette’s 400-meter relay “scorched” the field with the fastest time in the day meet to qualify for the night meet. In the finals, Seine Chiang, Carla Bailey, Sue Glackin, and Lee Boyd were leading when a dropped baton occurred. Their character was quickly revealed, as they picked up the baton and still defeated several teams.
In the season-opening Cowapa League Relays, the same quartet set a new meet record for the 400-meter relay of 52.3, despite a rain storm. Brenda Orand, Sue Glackin, Seine Chiang, and Carla Boyd added a new meet record of 1:57 for the 800-meter relay.
Despite having only 12 girls on the entire team, the girl’s won six of the eight league meets during the season. At the Centennial Invitational against teams from Oregon, Washington, and Canada, the 400-meter relay placed a very close second to Grant High School of Portland. At the Cascade Meet of Champions, the 400-meter relay won in 49.8 breaking the school record, and unofficially broke the State of Oregon record they had set the previous year.
At the Cowapa League District Championships, the Fisherettes would place third as a team. The 400 meter relay, despite having to be revamped at the last possible minute due to an injury, still won in 49.8 tying the school record and unofficial state record they set at Cascade. Other school records set during the season were: the 1600-meter relay 4:13.2, Chiang in the long jump 17’1”; Boyd in the 100-meters 11.9; Bailey in the high hurdles 16.1; and M. Glackin in the 800 2:29.6, and 1,500-meters 5:00.7.
At the State of Oregon Championship at Mount Hood Community College, the 400-meter relay placed a very close second. Boyd would race to second place finishes in the 100 and 200-meters, and S. Glackin placed third in the 100-meters. The team totaled 30 points to tie for second place in the final standings.
During the 1981-82 season’s the Astoria Girl’s Track and Field teams placed first and second in the State Championship, broke a remarkable 16 school records, (Three – the 100, 200 and 400-relay still stand as of this date), and set two new State of Oregon Records (400-relay and shot put).
