1981 Girls Track

State Champions

In the spring of 1981, a small but fiercely determined group of girls embarked on what would become a history-making season. Early on, the team developed a genuine, unselfish attitude of commitment. The unwritten rule of “everyone does four events (state maximum) every meet, for the good of the team” was unquestioned.

The season culminated in the team scoring 46 points to win the first and only Oregon School Athletic Association Track and Field State Championship Astoria High School has to this date.

Kam Johnson was a double State Champion winning the shot put at 45 feet and defeating the national leader in the discus with a school record throw of 144’2” earning All-State Honors in both events.

The 400-meter relay team of Seine Chiang, Lori Hill, Sue Glackin, and Lee Boyd came from behind to win the State Championship in a then state record time of 49.9 rounded up to 50.0 earning All-State Honors.

Lee Boyd, competing with a strained hamstring muscle, raced to second place in the 100-meters and third place in the 200 meters earning All-State honors in the 100-meters.

Jumping with a turned ankle, Seine Chiang leaped 16’6” to place fifth in the long jump.

Astoria’s sixth state competitor, Carla Bailey, closed out the Fisherette’s effort in the intermediate hurdles.

Perhaps their greatest accomplishment was that despite having only 11 girls on the team, they were Cowapa League Dual Meet Champions with a record of eight wins and one close loss, a tribute not only to their talent, but to their consistency, grit, and “all for one and one for all” spirit.
