After the first loss at Springfield, the Fishermen picked up speed and rolled over Newport, Clackamas, Milwaukee, David Douglas and Beaverton. Hillsboro, tied previously with us for first place, contributed to the happiness of homecoming by crumbling before the mighty Fisherman offense. With the win over Central Catholic, the Fishermen held a one game lead over Gresham. The final Astoria-Gresham game was a tie, leaving the Fishermen to compete with West Linn in the state semi-finals.
This game spelled tragedy to the invading Finns. At the end of this exciting contest, the Fishermen fell in defeat, six points short of victory.
To the men of Astoria, many honors came. The All-Star Metro team included five Fishermen on the starting eleven offense. Seniors recognized were Dick Gregg, Jerry Olson, Ron Osmus, Brian Paaso and Gordon Scott. Junior Larry Hill nailed down a spot on the defensive team. Gordon Scott was later picked as a first string end on the All-State team. Jerry Olson, Bruce Hoffman, Brian Paaso, Gordon Scott and Larry Hill were previously inducted as individuals into the Astoria High School Athletic Hall of Fame for their athletic triumphs.
With outstanding support from the student body, rally and pepsters, the 1958 Fisherman football team was a team to be reckoned with and continued the excellent tradition indicative of outstanding athletes and hard work ethic.
