A nearly perfect season is quite an accomplishment for any football team and for this gutsy group of Fishermen, it was almost within reach. With the exception of one game played before thousands of people at Multnomah Athletic Club, the small group from Astoria showed the state that Astoria was as good as anyone.
At Longview High SchoolFour Pavlat touchdowns, and 163 yards in 23 carries helped the Fishermen tally 350 yards of offense against the Lumberjacks.
Vs. Hood River High School
Astoria registered 491 yards offensively. Thomas scored twice, once on a 40 yard return of an interception. Pavlat carried the pigskin just four times, but totaled 172 yards, including a 71 yard score.
At Milwaukie High School
Win number three came over Milwaukie at Gyro Field. Astoria outrushed the Mustangs 234-96.
Vs. Central Catholic High School
Brown scored four times. Pavlat rambled for a pair of touchdowns and converted five extra points.
At Gresham High School
Brown pulled in three Gustafson aerials for touchdowns and rushed for a fourth. During the nine games, Brown had grabbed 16 passes-12 for scores. Astoria out gained Gresham 401-52. The victory gave AHS a 5-0 record in the Loop-Valley-Coast League. It was Astoria's first ever league affiliation.
Vs. Seaside High School
Astoria's second ever homecoming game saw Pavlat return the opening kickoff 90 yards. Brown recovered a fumble in the end zone, and Gustafson dashed 32 yards with an interception before Seaside knew what had hit them.
At Tillamook High School
Astoria rolled up 477 yards. Thomas scored on runs of 45 and 28 yards. Pavlat tossed touchdowns to Brown and Gustafson.
At North Bend High School
Astoria did not let the six hour ride to Coos County bother them, hammering the Bulldogs for their eighth win of the season.
Vs. Salem High School
Astoria piled up 402 yards in winning the annual Mayor's Cup trophy. Seagren, Thompson, Simmons, Larson, and Smart all started for the Fishermen on the interior line.
Vs. Hillsboro High School
Two quick scores by Pavlat sent the Spartans away from historic Gyro Field in the first round of state play.
Vs. North Marion High School
Bumala, one of the few underclassmen in the AHS lineup, scored twice, and Pavalat booted six conversions, as the Fishermen racked up 515 yards.
Vs. Grant
At Portland's Multnomah Stadium
A crowd of 8,480 witnessed the Astoria-Grant tussle. At least 800 Astorian's made the trip by train, calling for an extra 13 cars to be added to the regular Portland run.
Grant, which beat Toledo 31-0 a week earlier, had won five of the previous eight
Oregon prep football titles. Grant was riding a 22 game win streak, and Astoria could not stay with the powerful Portlanders.
Grant and Grants Pass played to a 14-14 tie a week later, sharing the 1951 title.
