1935 Basketball

State Champions

A team of "All-Stars" is how the Portland media described the 1934-35 John Warren - coached Astoria High School basketball team. This would be Warren's final season at the helm of the Fishermen. In his seven years at AHS, he put together a 192-35 record. His four state hoop championships had Astorians calling for sainthood. Many of the records established by the 1934-35 team were still believed to be the Oregon prep standards at the time of their induction into the Hall of Fame in 1997.

Astoria's 44 games played and 40 wins overall are impressive. At home, the Fishermen were 24-2. The 24 wins, along with the 26 contests at home, are thought to be Oregon records.

Astoria lost just one of its last 24 games enroute to the state crown. That loss came at the hands of the Oregon State Frosh by a 25-20 count.

Seniors on the 1934-35 team were 27-7, 35-4 and 40-4 (102-15) in their three years at the corner of 16th and Jerome. During that period Astoria basketball teams were part of 10 straight wins at the state tournament. They had a hand in ringing up 28 consecutive District Tournament wins over a six-year span and were in on most of the 40 straight victories AHS won at home during the mid-1930's.

At the state tournament, Anet and Sarpola were named to the All-Tournament 1st team. It was Anet's second straight selection to the honor unit. Sarpola, a junior, was on his way to three consecutive trips into the record books.

Nilsen, who later served as the head football coach at South Eugene High School, was picked to take home the state tournament's sportsmanship trophy awarded by radio station KXL.
