Reflection. Technology.

During the past years we've had a lot of different experiences with technology at ASFM. Talking to different DTs I could see that we have the same expectations about technology and blended learning, we expect it to be diverse, specially with so many different grade levels. Innovation is very important, specially after we've tried so many tools, I think that's a big challenge for all of us, not only DTs. And of course, having fun, students, teachers, admin, there's no point of trying and practicing something if fun is not a component.

Have a great school year!!!!!

Kick Ass Learning!

The moment I watched the video I remember about a teacher I had in 10th grade, she used to teach Chemistry and it was the worst class you could imagine. It wasn't traditional it was something else, you couldn't talk, you didn't have an opinion, and of course I failed that class, and until now I still feel the same when I hear the word CHEMISTRY. On the other hand, I had an algebra teacher, he used to get in the classroom not prepared, no notebooks, no books, he would walk in front of the board and think about what we were gonna do that day. He always made up the problems, the topic we were going to learn that day, sometimes he didn't even know the answer, he worked with us, it was so fun, because we could see him struggle also; it was my favorite class, and now I can tell I love math thanks to him, he made it fun for me, he made us go to that class everyday and always talk about what he was gonna do that day, it was a kick ass class!
As a teacher today sometimes we forget that feeling, we want to teach the curriculum, specially in lower grades, we need to understand that kids have more needs including their emotional needs.

I think that the video is a great reminder about what we want to be as teachers, to not forget how we felt when we were students, to remember what we wanted from our teachers back then and deliver that to our kids.

Blended Reflection

This school year has been one of the most exciting years, my students love technology and that helps me get creative, we used Smart Board, iPod touch, iPads, we played with QR Codes, we learned with Kahoot, we shared videos, songs, parents got involved.
As a Digital Teacher my biggest challenge always was to include technology with little kids, but this year, they made it so easy! I realized that it can be possible to have a blended classroom in lower grades, I didn't teach them much, they taught me how to be a digital teacher.

Looks like scientists!! For the last unit in writing students are working in their writing projects, they need to write one book for every unit they learned this year. I saw some of the students struggling with the "Writing like scientists" unit. I mentioned to one of them that he could an iPad and KidsSearch to investigate about what animal he was writing, immediately he got super excited and started to write about ants. In that moment a lot of students followed his example and asked me for an iPad, now I had 5 students learning more about sharks, ladybugs, spiders, ants and flowers. The results were amazing, kids use scientist words, they labeled thanks to the pictures they found and most of all they had a lot of fun with a unit that for me is very difficult. Thanks to technology students took a risk and went beyond with their imagination, and know everyday when is time for writing workshop a lot of students approach me to ask for iPads and write like scientists.

Tech TLC

Last week at ASFM during TLC Tuesday, all staff met at the Multipurpose Room to get ready for reflecting on our LMS Haiku Learning. After a quick introduction and explanation every team went to work independently. I'm a kinder teacher aide, and for kinder it has been a challenging year specially with Haiku. After a great dialogue with my team and reflection, we decided to use iMovie, I am familiar with this tool but it's been a long time since the last time that I've used it, and with the new layout it was a little bit hard, specially trying to put all ideas in one slide. Even though I love iMovie I feel that it was the wrong tool to use, I think that if you are working with limited time, you need a tool that doesn't have so  many settings, because one of the problems was that we didn't change slides' time and audience didn't have the time to read them. But in spite of the tool, I feel that it was a great TLC, sometimes I don't have the time to chat with each one of the teachers, and it was great to hear about all the interesting tech things happening in their classrooms.
