Begich Middle School is a state of the art design that blends with natural settings to provide safe, comfortable and accessible use. The two-story facility features the latest technology to enhance instruction and includes a fully-equipped science lab with preparation rooms, applied technology, art, family and consumer science, physical education and music areas. The school design is focused on multi-purpose use for the school and community.


Design discussions began in March 2003. The school's groundbreaking ceremony was held April 29, 2005. Building construction was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.

Building size

The facility is approximately 174,000 sq. ft. consisting of 40 core academic spaces arranged in four "houses" to provide a home base for smaller groups of students.


Begich Middle School is located on a 30.5 acre site south of DeBarr Road and west of Muldoon Road. Chester Creek flows along the south side of the property offering habitat and stream study opportunities. The street address is 7440 Creekside Center Drive, Anchorage, Alaska 99504.


Kumin Associates, Inc. Previous ASD project experience includes Bardett High School renewal, Goldenview Middle School and Denali Elementary School.

Construction cost

$52 million for construction was approved by voters in 2004. Sixty percent of construction costs are being paid by the state of Alaska through the school debt reimbursement program.

Student capacity

1,058 students. School will relieve long-standing overcrowding at three middle schools and will house sixth-graders from five elementary schools.  Interesting fact: There are 1133 student lockers built into the school!


Begich Middle School will offer an academic program based on the middle school concept which uses the team approach. It will educate students in grades 6-8. This is ASD's second 6-7-8 middle school; the first was Mirror Lake Middle School.


Begich Middle School has an indoor track, outdoor track, hockey rink, baseball field, tennis courts and a multi-use turf field.

On November 13, 2006 the Anchorage School Board chose Nicholas J. Begich Middle School to be the name for the new Muldoon area middle school (School Board Memorandum)
