to Nicholas J. Begich Middle School's Family and Consumer Science
(F.C.S.) program. There have been a number of changes in the
traditional Home Economics field that will encourage your student to
actively learn skills they can use throughout their lives. The 7th and
8th grade F.C.S. program will last for one semester (18 weeks), whereas, the 6th
grade program will last for one quarter (9 weeks). Depending upon the grade
level, your child will have the opportunity to explore the areas of
food preparation, kitchen safety and sanitation, nutrition, career pathways, hand and machine sewing,
personal finance, interior design, and babysitter training.
6th grade students will
be participating in five food labs and creating 2-3 sewing projects.
They will also be studying nutrition, kitchen tools, safety and sanitation,
and learning to use kitchen tools, irons, and sewing machines.
7th & 8th grade students will
be participating in ten food labs, learning hand sewing skills, and
creating a more complex sewing project on the sewing machine. Other
subjects include kitchen safety/ sanitation, kitchen
tools, and nutrition. 7th graders also study babysitter training and personal finance. 8th graders study child development, careers, and interior design.
