At OMS each grade is divided into several clusters. Students within each cluster share the same core teachers (English, Math, Science and Social Studies). They attend most of their classes within a few adjacent rooms. Each cluster is like a small school within a large school.
Students are assigned to clusters during the summer and will be informed about their cluster via a letter sent by mail before the start of school.
A great deal of effort goes into deciding which students end up in which cluster. A number of factors are considered, including balance of abilities, peer relationships, special needs, and numbers of students.
Students do not remain with the same group of children every year.
One of the clusters is multi grade (640/740). The 640/740 cluster rooms are in the 6th grade corridor and the students in the multi grade cluster will share the same core teachers. However 6th and 7th grade students will not mix in the rooms.
New for 2016-17: a half cluster (840) has been formed to accommodate the large number of students. Students in the 840 cluster will have two -rather than four- core teachers (one teaching Math and Science and another one teaching English and Social Studies).
