K Erickson

Special Education

Meet Mrs. Erickson
Hello!  My name is Kelly Erickson.  I am currently teaching reading and language arts for 5th and 6th grades.  I received my Associate of Arts degree from Western Wyoming Community College and my Bachelor of Science degree from Chadron State College.  I began teaching in 1999.  I have taught kindergarten, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades.  I have also taught several subjects, including reading, english, and math.  Currently, I am teaching 5th and 6th grade reading and language arts.  I absolutely love teaching.  I love getting to know all of the students and honestly believe that I learn as much from them as they do from me.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family.  Together, we enjoy camping, watching movies, and going for walks with our dogs (who are part of our family too. )  I also enjoy reading and volunteering at the local animal shelter.

I am very excited about this school year and am looking forward to working with and getting to know each and every student in my classes.  If you have any questions, please feel free to email me, or call me at the middle school at 762-3079.  My planning period  this year (2015/2016) is from 2:45 to 3:28.

Grading Procedures
For the 2015/2016 school year, I will be changing the way I score papers.  I will be adding a Value Added system to some of my assignments.   When I enter an assignment that is Value Added, I will put a VA after it in the gradebook.  Value added means that the points earned will be added toward the test. (It is essentially extra credit).  In general, notes we take on vocabulary words will be Value Added.  Assignments in class and tests will still be graded based off of points earned out of how many points possible.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me by emailing me from this page, or calling me at 762-3079.  Thank you!!
Language Arts

I have two language arts classes this year. I have a 6th grade class that is period 2 and a 5th grade class that is period 4.  We generally do not have homework in language arts, as the assignments are done together in class.  If a student has been absent, it may be necessary to take work home or schedule a time with me to go over any skills that they may have missed.   This year, both classes will be working on writing complete sentences, identifying parts of speech, the six traits of writing, and the writing process.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Literature

I have two reading classes this year.  I have a 6th grade class that is period 3, and a 5th grade class that is period 5.  Students will generally not have homework in this class, unless, for some reason, we did not complete our work in class.  The students have been given a STAR test, but will not be expected to read AR as an assignment yet, because we are reading a novel in class together.  Both classes will be working on increasing fluency and accuracy, reading comprehension, making inferences, vocabulary ,identifying figurative language, and much more.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.
