Mission Statement: In my encounters with all students, I will strive to teach and encourage them to be problem solvers, both in and out of the classroom. I will help them to learn how to ask questions and use Scientific Inquiry to work toward finding answers to those questions. Above all, I will work to instill in the students a curiosity about the world and space around them and develop the tools to be come life-long learners.
Value Added Grading System
Students’ grades will be based on quizzes and tests, and application of concepts in labs and on other in-class activities. This will tell me what each student has actually learned and knows.
Many assignments given will be graded on a “Value Added” system. Here is how it will work. Students will complete the given assignment. We will go over the assignment in class that day or the following school day. Each student will ”grade” his/her own paper with a red pen. During this time, the student will make corrections to answers and complete any unfinished work using a red pen. When this is finished, the paper will be handed in for me to look over. Students will be given points on how much of the assignment they completed prior to “grading” in class. A point is given for each ¼ of the assignment completed. This means that a student can earn up to 4 points on an assignment. These points will then be added to their over all grade for the quarter. (Please note, this is a correction to the letter sent home.)
If a student has any writing tool in his/her hand other than a red pen during grading, the student will receive no credit for the assignment. Students are responsible for bringing their own red pens to class. I do not provide them.
If a student does not pass a chapter test, there is an opportunity for improvement. The student may come in after school and take an alternative test using the textbook and notes. This will give the student the opportunity to review and learn the material and raise that test score to 80%, depending on the grade of the 2nd test. Please note: 80% is the highest grade that can be earned on the 2nd test for the final grade.
Even though assignments are not receiving what is considered traditional credit, they are still a valuable learning tool. It is an opportunity to practice and review vocabulary and concepts needed for the test. They can also be used as study tools for the chapter test.
Overview Through the study of Geography, students will develop knowledge and understanding about the characteristics and spatial distribution of environments and their relation ship with people, economy, politics and the global community. Students will explore the culture, population and features of the countries in Africa, Asia and Europe.
Goals 1. The aim of this Geography course is to stimulate students’ enjoyment of and interest in the interaction of the physical and human environments. 2. How physical, social, cultural, economic and political factors shape communities, including the global community. 3. Intercultural understanding.
Evaluation The AMS grading scale will be used to calculate grades: A: 100% - B: 92% - C: 84% - D: 76% - F: 69% and below Grades will be taken in the following categories: Unit test – quizzes – work in class – notebook.
Expectation and behavior Attendance is extremely important. BE PREPARED: Bring the proper materials to class each day. Sit up in your desk. Listen and take part in the class. BE RESPECTFULL TO SELF AND OTHERS: Students are expected to respect the property of others and treat others with respect.
