Unit 12

Chapter Overview
During this unit, students use calorimetry to investigate the amount of heat absorbed or released during a phase change and in chemical reactions using the law of
conservation of energy.  They perform stoichiometric calculations of enthalpy changes.

*Energy is conserved when heat is transferred.
*Energy transformations can be measured in the laboratory.
*Water has a unique heating curve.
*Chemical reactions are accompanied by energy transformations.

***Students may think heat and temperature are the same.
***Students may not understand conservation of energy by means of energy transformations.
***Students may not understand the role of friction in energy conservation.
