Core Democratic Values

Instructions

Each week students are required to find an article that shows the current CDV. To find articles online, students should do the following: 
  1. Brainstorm search terms using the CDV's definition.
  2. Go to mel.org.
  3. Select MeL Databases.
  4. Scroll down to and select InfoTrac Newsstand.
  5. Go to Advanced Search.
  6. First keyword
    • enter search terms using the value definition.
  7. Remember to use "quotation marks" around terms you want to search together.
    • Use "+" to search for more than one term at a time.
  8. Select Publication Country for next index (instead of keyword) and type in United States.  Select the arrow next to AND and change to NOT (this will remove articles from the US).
  9. Filter out articles by selecting the following from Content Type from the left side of the screen:
    • Document Types: Brief Article
    • Sections: News
  10. Then look for an article of interest.
 Make sure the article is: 
• NOT an editorial 
• NOT an opinion article 
• NOT a sports article 
• NOT an arts and entertainment article

12.  Use the PRINT tool on the side to print off the article 
• If a printer is NOT available, use the EMAIL tool and email it to me, schullc@harpercreek.net WITH YOUR NAME and I will print it off for you.

13.  Fill out the Core Democratic Values Assignment Sheet (see attachments).  Highlight or Underline key     
        passages in your article.

15.  Place article and assignment sheet in your folder.  Label the map with the location of your article.
