Definition of Satire

posted Feb 15, 2016, 5:32 PM by Cynthia Schofield
In literature, the ridicule of any subject – an idea, or institution, an actual person or type of person, or even mankind in general – to lower it in the reader’s esteem and make it laughable. Though a satirist may be attacking a rival or personal enemy, he will usually claim to be – and indeed often will be – ridiculing some representative vice for the general benefit of mankind.

A work or manner that blends a censorious attitude with humor and wit for improving human institutions or humanity. Satirists attempt through laughter not so much to tear down as to inspire a remodeling.
