Test Your Watersense! - Learn how to save water in your house by using the arrow keys to move "Flo" around the maze. (Ages 7+ or with a parent)

Fish Kids - Learn how to use fishing advisories to help determine which fish are safe to eat. (Ages 7+ or with a parent)

Water Resources

Water Books - Get a list of books on our water-related theme. All of these books can be requested from the Hennepin County Library.

Mississippi River Fish Coloring pages - Learn about some of the types of fish which populate the Mississippi River.

Junior Ranger Program of the Mississippi River - Learn how to become a Mississippi Junior Ranger and attend upcoming events.

Environmental Kids Club - A variety of sites on water knowledge from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

Camp Information Packet

A camp packet was mailed home on May 23rd. This packet included a letter to parents, camp schedule, general information policies, and detail bus information if you had requested bus transportation on your original camp registration form. Please see the attachments if you need another copy.

Field Trips!

Our field trips have been finalized for the camp. Each day will be spent partially at Concord and either the morning or afternoon we will be offsite exploring the "Wonders of Water" out in the communitity. Look for more information coming soon with final details of the camp.

· Bredeson Park - Nature walk with a watershed educator (June 14 - afternoon)

· Edina Art Center - Create a unique one-of-a kind water jug out of clay (June 15 - afternoon)

· Lake Cornelia - Department of Natural Resources: Fish in the Neighborhood program (June 15 - afternoon)

· SEA LIFE Aquarium - Tour the aquarium and learn about a variety of water (June 16 - afternoon)

· Science Museum - View the "Journey on the River" exhibit on the Mississippi River; Explore water concepts in the Big Back Yard (outdoor gallery); Ranger guided tour of the Mississippi River! (June17 - all day)

Summer Camp T-Shirt Design Contest - Think like an Artist!

Calling all second grade artists! This is your chance to show off your creative skills by coming up with an original design for our summer camp t-shirts. The Young Scholars teachers will select 3 designs from amoung those submitted. Our selection will be based on the design which follows the guidelines and best exemplyfies our theme: The Wonder of Water! (W.O.W.!) Every Young Scholars students will get to vote for the winning design which will be printed on royal blue

t-shirts.

2011 Young Scholars Summer Camp - A camp for your mind!

Location: Concord Elementary

Cost: FREE

All Young Scholars students will be invited to attend this free camp which will be based out of Concord Elementary. We are in the midst of looking into a variety of activities and experiences centering on the theme of WATER – which is a great summer theme and fits our state’s nickname as “Land of 10,000 Lakes.” Students will have a lunch and two snacks provided as we explore water related ideas in and around our community. A letter with more details and a permission slip will be sent out after Spring Break.

Destination: Design Overall Camp Goal

Get kids excited about learning science, technology, math, and engineering: how do you do this? Present them with interesting experiences that capture their imagination and provide problems/challenges they want to solve

Other goals

  1. Playfully explore design and experimentation

  2. Utilize activities/experiences that fosters and develops their critical and creative problem solving skills

  3. Skills to be developed: imagining/planning; building/constructing; testing/exploring/experimenting; revising/innovating all the while sharing their thinking and collaborating with others

  4. Create some awareness of the many careers which use STEM (STEM = Science, technology, engineering, and math)

A letter will be sent out in May with more details including transportation information.

Cost: No cost! Summer Day Camp is provided by funds from the State Integration Budget (Lunches are not provided this year)

Overall Camp Goal

Get kids excited about learning science, technology, math, and engineering: how do you do this? Present them with interesting experiences that capture their imagination and provide problems/challenges they want to solve. We will do this through learning about the history, design,

and development of many modes of air transportation (1st/2nd) and the science behind roller coasters (3rd/4th).

Other goals

  1. Playfully explore design and experimentation

  2. Utilize activities/experiences that fosters and develops their critical and creative problem solving skills

  3. Skills to be developed: imagining/planning; building/constructing; testing/exploring/experimenting; revising/innovating all the while sharing their thinking and collaborating with others
