ReadKiddoRead.com is a user-friendly site designed to help parents, teachers, librarians, and other adults find books that kids of all ages will enjoy.


VocabGrabber.  It can generate an interactive vocabulary list from any text.  You could use it with your teacher computer and lcd projector, not to mention interwrite pad.

Alpha-bot is the word-spelling robot with a word game for children. Also try the word games Robo-bee, Big bot and Jumble Kids


Logic Zoo is a game that requires the player to put “animals” into the appropriate sections of a “zoo” based on what they look like — short ears, long ears, etc.

Learning Chocolate is a very good interactive vocabulary site for beginning readers. The site is divided into categories, provides audio support for the text, and has numerous re-enforcing online games.




ABC Fast Phonics is a pretty good site for beginning readers to reinforce their understanding of phonics.

America Writes for Kids! you can search for information about authors and their books alphabetically or by state.

Explore Classic Storybooks 
Read.gov features classic books online for children and teens. Find the text and illustrations of “Humpty Dumpty,” “Mother Goose,” “The Three Bears,” “Our Flag,” The Arabian Nights,The Secret GardenThe Raven and other classics. The site also provides Webcasts of authors, writing contests and teaching resources. 

Merriam-Webster Word Games is an impressive collection of about twenty different games accessible to various levels

Rebus Roundup Stories are nice activities from Highlights Magazine where beginning readers have to place pictures in the appropriate places of a story. There’s audio support for the text as well.

Storyline Online: The Screen Actors Guild Foundation presents an online streaming video program featuring SAG members reading children's books out loud!

Speakaboos! It's easy to bring Speakaboos into the classroom! Our stories and activities help students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities, as well as teach fundamental computer skills.

The Super Hero Squad invites kids to create their own super hero comic strips and comic books.

Batalugu is a new site that lets you create your own online book for free. You can then share it’s url address.

Brain Nook is a virtual world in which students can practice their mathematics and English skills. Brain Nook provides students with a series of scenarios that they have to resolve  by answering mathematics and language arts questions.


Mr. Thorne Does Phonics is a website and YouTube channel dedicated to teaching kids phonics through videos.  The site has a great tag line, “Where learning to read becomes reading to learn.”

Young Authors and Writers Group: offers students a wealth of information on how to write, how to illustrate and how to get published.

"Digital Is" is a new site from the National Writing Project.  It provides resources and ideas on using writing in the digital age.

Activities to Learn and Practice Writing


Groove To English has quite a few different activities for English Language Learners, and it looks pretty good. They’re divided into sections, including vocabulary, writing, and listening.

Proofreading: Spelling and Writing is a really nice series of many, many exercises where students have to correct paragraphs. It’s divided by levels of difficulty

Road to Grammar is a free resource featuring quizzes, games, and lessons for English language learners.  Great games, quizzes and activities for any learner!

Writing Prompts

Grabba Beast: Have students create a beast and then use the image as a writing prompt.

Future Me is a neat service that lets you write an email to your future self and have it delivered to your email inbox at a time that you schedule.

Publishing Writing 

KidsWrite has launched KidsCafé, a new environment that mirrors the 21st century workplace, where students of all ages can publish their writings and art through a real-world, technology-driven book publishing experience.


Online Writing: This online resource teaches kids how to create online a brochure, newspaper, flyer or booklet.  The formatting is already done. The Guide is a simple tutorial.  It would be easy for kids to use (at home too).  One drawback: you can’t upload pictures.  A space is reserved for the pictures but you draw/glue a picture after you print it.

Comic Master - Fun site for digital storytelling that has a drag-n-drop interface.

Write Comics is a super-simple tool to create comic strips without requiring any registration. You can learn more about it, and see samples and a video, at Ana Maria Menezes’ blog.

These websites are great to use with students in the lab or on interactive white boards.
Wordquest is a new site from PBS where beginning readers can learn new vocabulary and practice phonics in a fun way. Users can join a “team” or just play as a guest

***Spelling City is now called Vocabulary and Spelling City and has added a few games, including one using sentence scrambles.

Visual Wordsput any vocabulary word into this visual website and see related words & definitions.


Dictionaries

One Word is a simple writing prompt generator. The way it works is the user clicks "go" on the One Word homepage and they are presented with one word. Users then have sixty seconds to write in the text box whatever comes to their minds regarding that word. The idea is not so much to write definitions of the words, but rather it is to write sentences using the word.


Snappy Words is a free visual dictionary and thesaurus. Enter any word or phrase into the Snappy Words search box and it will create a web of related words, phrases, and definitions.

Wordia is a free visual, video dictionary.

Visuwords uses a web design to show users the definitions of words and the connections between words.
