Did you know....
For our service project, we decided to serve at
- An estimated 5.1 million Americans are affected by Alzheimer's?
- it is estimated that 454,000 new cases of Alzheimer's will be diagnosed this year?
- by 2048 1 in 45 might have Alzheimer's disease?
Sunrise Assisted Living. Many older people cannot live on their own
because of diseases like Alzheimer's and Dementia, and also because they need help doing everyday things. Our goal was to bring these people comfort and happiness, and helping them to feel as at home as possible. Bringing them joy even for a little bit gives us joy. This project will help us realize the problem and how we can fix it as best as we can even though there is no real medical treatment. We hope to help the elderly at Sunrise live a better life. Also, we want to learn more about how this disease effects people and how we can give comfort to those who have Alzheimer's/Dementia. We hope to learn a lot from the residents at Sunrise and our experiences there.
After volunteering at Sunrise for a few months, we have learned so much about the people living there and what they enjoy doing. Even the people with Alzheimer's have memories from a long time ago that they like to share. It was a great experience learning about what kind of lives they had and what they wished they could change, in addition to what they most enjoyed. It seemed like they really enjoyed having younger people around to talk to and we feel like we positively impacted the residents while we volunteered just by taking time to be there with them. We are so glad that we had the opportunity to learn about Sunrise and how they work, in addition to getting to know the people living there. It's so important that the residents have someone to talk to, someone who really cares about them, and we feel like we were able to provide just that.
