Ask/Tell your child:  

Tell who (classmate) you wrote your biography about.

Retell the read aloud Flat Stanley.

Grab a handful of coins, sort them, and find the total value.

Find and explore maps you have at home.  Find the compass rose, key, scale, title

What have you been doing in Gym? Art? Music?

Can you tie your shoes, zip your coat, untie a knot all by yourself?  If not, let's practice!

Academic Focus

Look here each week to see what your child has been learning or is currently working on in class.

Reading:  IDR (independent daily reading), good fit reading, find good fit books and read for 30 minutes  Fluency = reading accurately using phrasing and expression at an appropriate rate, Expression when reading character dialogue.

Accuracy/Phonics:  consonants, short a, short i, short o, long a (ay), long e (ee), _fszl "fizzle rule" = double consonant at the end of a word after a short vowel, -ck, sh,  s blends (sc, sl, sm, sn, sp, st,)   l- blends (fl, cl, sl, pl, bl),   r- blends (cr, fr, tr, dr, br, gr),  _y (sounds like long i), _e (sounds like long e), _o (sounds like long o), ch digraph, or, all, th, ing, ang, ong, ung, oy, ar, wh, ink, ank, onk, unk, oo (as in soon)

Reading Accuracy Strategies:  track the print with your finger, look for picture clues, blend the sounds to determine the word, look all the way through the word to cross check ending, chunking (sound out syllables and put them together to read a multisyllabic word), flip the sound (vowels, c, g, y), use context - skip and go back

Comprehension:  retell including most details and character names, make text-to-self connections, text-to-text connections,  story elements, Visualizing, Problem and Solution, Conventions of Nonfiction (photographs, captions), Vocabulary - use context to determine meaning

Expand Vocabulary Use context to understand unknown vocab and ask for help defining if necessary. Writing Skills:  Use spacing between words, lower case letters, complete sentences, capital letters on the first word/beginning of sentences and punctuation after the last word/end of sentences Types of sentences and punctuation (statement=period, exclaiming=exclamation point, asking/questioning = question mark, command = period or exclamation point
