It is an honor to be in my seventh year at Highlands, and it is really exciting to join 3rd/4th Grade Discovery. I previously taught in Fifth Grade Discovery, but always wanted to have a multi-year experience with students and families. It is always a joy to learn from and with students and families. Ever year’s journey has given me insight on how truly special Highlands Elementary really is. From my previous experience as a paraprofessional at South View Middle School, and as a substitute throughout the Edina Schools, I can attest to how Highlands stands out amongst the Edina Schools.
My path to Highlands is well traveled and has gone many places. In fact, I am very familiar with the many sites and cultural influences the states have to offer. Both of my parents were in the military, resulting in many, many moves spurring a love for history and travel. After graduating from St. Louis Park I attended Minnesota State University, Mankato. However, my hobby with technology lured me away from the education field. An internship with IBM, led to placing college on hold to pursue a career with computers. After a couple years of an impersonal and frustrating computer world, my love for a career working with computers dwindled. Returning to Mankato I completed a degree in education. During my first years as a teacher I completed a Masters degree in reading education at Concordia University: St. Paul. Most recently I finished a two year writing certificate program through the University of Minnesota sponsored by the Edina Ed Fund.
My latest journey is with my wife, Shandra and our two children: Lila and Levi. Both of my children really opened my eyes to how truly precious life is, and what it means to be a parent. I’m sure many stories of her will be shared over the year with you all, and I’ll likely ask you how you did it.
