Grade 7 Language Arts



Course Description

 The Language Arts course is designed to challenge all students and to develop their college and career readiness. This course aligns with the Minnesota Common Core Standards, which were implemented in the 2012-13 school year, and focus on reading, writing, speaking, viewing, listening, media literacy and language use.  The course textbook is Grade 7 Literature from Holt McDougal.


Course Goals


  • Build strong content knowledge.
  • Respond to the varying demands of audience, task, purpose and discipline.
  • Comprehend as well as critique.
  • Use evidence to support ideas.
  • Use technology and digital media strategically and capably.
  • Come to understand other perspectives and cultures.

Major Units of Study

  • Fiction including: Short Stories, Poetry, Mystery, Novels
  • Non-fiction including: print and non-print texts
  • Writing including: narrative/creative, explanatory, argument, 6 traits, and the writing process
  • Language including: word roots, prefixes, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation.
