               8th Grade Language Arts

Welcome to the 2018-19 school year!

My name is Nancy Schrank, and this is my second year teaching at Lake and my 11th year in District 833.  I enjoy teaching at Lake and working with 8th graders in particular because of the positive energy, effort, and curiosity here.  8th grade is a fun year and one that is important in your overall education, and I am thrilled to be your teacher.

Here are some details about my family life and my personal interests. I have two kids named Eva (18) and Calvin (Cal) who is 11.  Eva is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls where she is studying Art. She is an accomplished dancer and currently teaches a variety of dance styles at her studio, St. Croix Valley Dance Academy.  Cal excels at both baseball and hockey and works hard at whatever he does. In his free time he plays video games, reads, and plays with his cats.  As a family we enjoy traveling, hiking and camping and also biking and swimming.  When I am not spending time with my kids, I enjoy watching movies, reading, and exploring the Twin Cities.

This year in Language Arts we will be having regular "parleys" or large group discussions over relatively controversial issues in current events. Participation in these parleys will give you the chance to form and defend your opinions, research facts to support your viewpoint, and gain confidence in speaking in front of your peers. We will also be writing three types of papers that will lay the groundwork for writing that you will do next year at the high school level.  In addition to the literature that we study as a large group, you will continue to participate in small group literature circles and to read independently according to novels and genres that peek your interest.

I guarantee that if you work hard, ask questions, and keep an open mind you will grow as an individual as well as a student.  Enjoy your last days of summer vacation, and get ready for a fun and educational year!
