Academic Standards

Science
4.2.1.1.1     Measure temperature, volume, weight and length using appropriate tools and units.
4.3.2.3.1     Identify where water collects on Earth, including atmosphere, ground and surface water, and describe how water moves through the Earth system using the processes of evaporation, condensation and precipitation.
4.3.4.1.1     Describe how the methods people utilize to obtain and use water in their homes and communities can affect water supply and quality.

Math
4.4.1.1     Use tables, bar graphs, timelines and Venn diagrams to display data sets. The data may include fractions or decimals. Understand that spreadsheet tables and graphs can be used to display data.

Language Arts

4c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions.

Project Description

Students in our fourth grade program participate in a yearlong study of our lake and the surrounding environment.  Each month students study a different aspect of the lake, including the water temperature and pH, the flora and fauna of the area, and the quality of the water.  As a part of this project, students work with Freshwater Scientific Services, a local company, to determine the health of our lake.  As a culminating activity, students use technology such as websites, blogs and digital publications to show what they have learned.
