ENGINEERING A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Our curriculum meets state and district academic standards in ALL content areas.  Our VALUE ADDED STANDARDS and integrated curriculum provide opportunities for students to excel in science, math, engineering, and technology through inquiry and the engineering design process.  Our curriculum will center around a proactive hands-on, minds-on approach.

 

VALUE ADDED STANDARDS:

 

Students will conduct scientific investigations

  • Identify questions and use critical thinking to guide their own investigations
  • Use data collection tools to observe, analyze, and report results
  • Conduct student initiated investigations through labs and field experiences
  • Use the textbook as a reference tool rather than as the main or only source of information

 

Students will collaborate to investigate and/or solve real problems in their community

  • Participate in service learning projects/activities aligned with the value added standards
  • Contribute to online, collaborative citizen science and engineering projects
  • Work directly with professionals in the STEM fields by cultivating partnerships with local and community businesses
  • Use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions

 

Students will use digital media to communicate information effectively to multiple audiences

  • Engage in a wireless technology-rich environment, to seamlessly integrate technology and communication into the learning process
  • Collaborate, interact, and publish with peers, experts or others, using a variety of digital media tools
  • Create and build an e-portfolio to demonstrate learning, house products/accomplishments and  progress toward goals

 

Students will develop a cultural understanding by collaborating directly with learners of other cultures

  • Seek and engage in a culturally-rich learning environment by exploring ideas from different global perspectives
  • Increase global awareness by considering divergent opinions, change opinions or conclusions when evidence supports the change, and seek information about new ideas encountered through academic experiences
  • Interact with students and experts from culturally diverse backgrounds through video conferencing and Web 2.0 tools (interactive information sharing)
  • Connect STEM concepts to student experiences, see how human nature influences STEM and explore how science and technology affects their lives
  • Apply STEM skills and understanding to examine social issues, solve real problems and make concrete decisions

 

Students will demonstrate creative thinking and develop innovative solutions

  • Use critical thinking skills to identify problems, engineer solutions and make informed decisions
  • Employ the engineering design process to generate new ideas, products or processes
  • Use digital tools and media rich resources to express personal learning in a creative format

 

 

Students will share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as change agents of society.
  •  Explore societal issues, problems and ethical dilemmas
  •  Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge about societal and global problems
  • Develop achievable action plans to solve authentic, real-world problems
  • Demonstrate leadership and confidence by implementing action plans toward societal change
  • Evaluate social action outcomes and make necessary revisions
