School News:

Parental Input for the 2016-2017 School Year:

Parents wishing to give input for their child’s placement in a classroom for the 2016-2017 school year may do so in written form until Friday, April 8, 2016. Direct requests for a specific teacher will not be accepted. This is due to the fact that some teachers will change grade levels or positions due to a variety of reasons. However, if there is a teacher you feel would not be a good match for your child, that information is welcome.  As an entire staff, we spend a great deal of time at the end of each school year working on class lists that will help students be successful. E-mail is the preferred form of communication so that Mr. Goeldner can send a verification reply. All parental documents should be e-mailed directly to Mr. Goeldner at drew.goeldner@district196.org.


100% of the money from the Spring Arts Night basket raffle and silent auction goes back to our school programs for your child!

We need volunteers to coordinate the basket raffle, and volunteers to wrap completed baskets!

Volunteers to hang student art on the wall!

Volunteers the evening of the event; to sell raffle tickets, help with security, the silent auction, we will find a place for you!

Many volunteers are needed for a successful evening on May 5th!

Support for the Joas Family on Wednesday, April 6

Mrs. Joas' (Red Pine kindergarten teacher) husband was hit on his bicycle on March 8 and has been in critical condition since. As a sign of support Red Pine staff will be wearing a ‘JoasStrong’ shirt or red shirt on Wednesday, April 6.  Anyone who chooses to, may join us.

Star Lab is Coming!:

Star Lab will arrive at Red Pine April 1st and stay in our media center for three weeks. All of our students will visit the lab at least once while it’s here. While in the lab, students will learn about stars, constellations, our moon, and stellar movement. Don’t be surprised if your child asks you to dust off your binoculars and dig out a star map for a night of stargazing with friends or family. Parents are invited to take a peek inside Star Lab before the April PTO meeting, beginning at 6PM in the Media Center.

LAST CHANCE!! -- GRASP Returns for Summer 2016

Parents, the GRASP summer math and reading workbook program is back for this summer.

More than 1,800 District 196 students completed GRASP math and reading packets last summer. Families say they like the GRASP option – it’s portable and flexible.

GRASP should not be considered as a replacement for participating in summer school, if a child qualifies.  GRASP is not intended to replace regular reading for enjoyment or math activities that strengthen a child’s fluency and love for math.

Final registration is due March 29.  NEW THIS YEAR: Do NOT return enrollment for to your child’s school!!!

View sample GRASP workbooks through the end of March in your school office. Stop by and see why the program has received rave reviews from parents, kids and teachers!

It is recommended students work on the grade level just completed, to review and reinforce skills learned during the school year.

Attention all 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grade GT and Young Scholars Families!

A few weeks ago you should have all received registration materials regarding Nature’s Engineers, a week- long summer camp for GT and Young Scholar students.  I am hoping that many of you will take advantage of this wonderful summer learning opportunity for your child.  I am sending home 2nd notices in this week’s Friday folders for those who have not yet signed up.  Even if your child will not participate in the program, I am asking that everyone check the box marked: no my child will not participate and return it to me.  All registration materials are due back at school by April 4th.  If you should have any questions regarding this opportunity, please feel free to email me at traci.mccarthy@district196.org.

Health & Wellness Committee:

Health & Fitness Fair & Eat Your Colors Run!

The Red Pine Health & Fitness Fair will be on Saturday, April 9 from 10:00–12:00​, followed immediately by our Eat Your Colors Run! We’ll have inflatables, over 30 vendors, chair massages, and Rita’s Italian Ice for refreshments!

T-shirt orders will be distributed to students on Friday, April 8.

Are you working on the Move-It Minute Challenge Sheet? Be sure to return by April 1.

Nurse’s Corner:

Welcome back Red Pine Families.  Hope your time off was FANTASTIC!

We are coming to the end of the school year.  It’s hard to look ahead to the fall, however, I just want to remind you once again about your child’s health information we need yearly and any emergency medications or daily meds I have at the end of the year.  Also, very very important to update your phone numbers in our system.  I am unable to do this.  This is the first place I look when I need to call you about your child.


At the end of the year parents NEED to collect their child’s pill bottles, expired medications, epi pens, Benadryl, Tylenol, cough drops etc..  Anything that I have of yours you will need to take back home.  I do not hold them through the summer.  


With the start of the new school year I will need new orders – dated for the 2016-17 school year and medication labeled and in a sandwich bag in the original bottle for oral tablets or a large bag for epi pens, inhalers, and nebulizers.  All medication needs to have the original label, bottle container.   Please make sure to have your child’s name and grade on the bag.  You can bring them to me in August at our open house.

Please do not send your child to school if they have had a temp, they need to be fever free for 24 hours WITHOUT medication.  (EX:  If Boyd wakes up at 8 am with a temp, and you give him Tylenol or Ibuprofen…and the temp goes down, he is still contagious.  You take his temp at 12 and he doesn’t have one – he cannot return to school until noon the next day.  If at 4 he spikes a temp and you give him Tylenol or ibuprofen, he is out the next day also.  Fever free without medication for 24 hours.)  

This will keep healthy kids healthy and keep any illnesses from spreading.

Please review the links below for some illnesses that have been present in our school.

More symptoms when to keep your child home.  

If your child comes to school with a fever, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, this passes quickly on to other children and can end up right back to you.  Keep in mind we have about 800+ kids and everyone wants to stay healthy.

Have your child stay home if:

~~Temperature of 100 or greater, may return when under 100 orally and without the use of fever reducers for 24 hours

~~Vomiting or diarrhea, may return when hasn’t had an issue for 24 hours

~~Severe coughing or difficulty breathing (if a nagging, itchy cough, please have child bring water bottle, encourage a lot of water)

~~Open sores on mouth

~~Skin rash or red eye from undetermined cause (if pink eye diagnosed, a MD’s note needed to return or treatment for 24 hours)

~~Head lice and scabies, until treatment complete

~~Any contagious conditions such as strep throat, impetigo, chickenpox, pertussis, mumps, Hep-A, measles, mumps, rubella, shingles, or herpes simplex

Always notify me of a contagious illness. I will keep track to see if there are clusters so I can notify the potentially exposed grade level.

Red Pine Spring Arts Night --Silent Auction Items Needed!

The Silent Auction at Spring Arts Night has raised a record number of funds that went back into our school. We are hoping to exceed our goals for this year and are once again looking for donations for the Silent Auction. Many items and services, including delicious cupcakes, video games, and estate planning (to name a few) were donated last year from Red Pine families with businesses in our community. School Pak

It is that time of year again!  We are getting everything in order for School Paks,for the 2016-2017 School year. In the coming weeks, we will have a link in the newsletter where you can shop for the school supplies for the next school year. You will be able to elect delivery to school (free) or delivery to home (for a fee). The paks that are being delivered to school will be able to be picked up at the School Open House in late August.
